Audience Segment (also know as audience or segment) is a set of IDs that a marketer wants to message, because of one of more attributes. Attributes are analogous to pieces of information stored in an envelope, while the IDs are analogous to the address on the outside of the envelope. Marketers target attributes (e.g., interest=sports) rather than IDs (e.g., first name). Marketers create audience segments via Boolean logic segmentation or triggered-membership rules on the attributes associated with user IDs.
